This Thursday (1 December), is World Aids Day and there's a big message for everyone in London about staying safe and preventing the spread of HIV.
Figures for HIV infection in the city are moving in the right direction, with a seven per cent drop in new cases last year.
However, HIV remains an important health challenge across the city. Local authorities across London, including Hounslow Council are urging everyone to remain vigilant.
The best ways to protect against AIDS and HIV are the four proven prevention methods.
These are:
- Regular testing for the virus.
- Using condoms.
- Using HIV prevention medicine, known as PrEP.
- Achieving 'undetectable' status - people who have been diagnosed with HIV take medication that means the virus cannot be transmitted to a sexual partner.
