New mums - know your diabetes risk

During Diabetes Awareness Week we are keen to highlight the support that is available to new mothers who developed Gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Approximately five per cent of pregnant women in England are diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).

A diagnosis of GDM carries a lifetime risk of progression to Type 2 diabetes of up to 60 per cent (particularly within the first 3-5 years).

Any woman can develop GDM during pregnancy, but there is an increased risk if:

  • body mass index (BMI) is above 30
  • previously had a baby who weighed 4.5kg (10lb) or more at birth
  • had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy
  • 1 of the parents or siblings has diabetes
  • are of South Asian, Black, African-Caribbean or Middle Eastern origin

If you are a woman that had diabetes during your pregnancy, please speak with your GP about a referral into the diabetes prevention programme.
