Be asthma alert and avoid the 'September spike'

We’re asking parents and carers to help protect their children from the September asthma spike.

During the summer, many children can forget to use their inhalers or think they don’t need them.

When the schools return, hospitals can see an increase in the number of children they see due to asthma attacks.

Make sure your child avoids a trip to A&E by following a few simple rules:

  • Make sure they use their preventer inhaler each day.
  • Find out when your child is due for an asthma check - arrange an appointment to make sure their asthma is under control.
  • Get your child to carry a copy or photo of their asthma action plan on their phone.
  • Make sure their school has an up-to-date copy of their asthma action plan.
  • Be aware of what their asthma triggers are, and what to do when symptoms develop.

If you or your child needs any advice or support, please speak to your GP.
