Protect Your Family Against Rise in Measles Cases

The Royal College Of Paediatrics And Child Health (RCPCH) has issued guidance on the treatment of measles, as health chiefs warn of a rise in cases across the UK.

Information from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows that children in London face the highest risk from measles of anyone in the country.

From 1 January to 30 September 2023, there have been 86 cases in London, which accounts for 60 per cent of the cases across the whole of England. Of those cases, 78 per cent were in children aged under 10.

The higher risk in London is primarily due to low vaccination rates over several years. If you are a parent, please check that your children are fully vaccinated with two MMR doses, giving them 99% life-long protection.

The first dose of the MMR vaccine is due when a child is one year old, and the second dose when they are three years and four months old.

You can contact your GP surgery to check if your child is up to date with their vaccinations. For children and babies, you can also check their personal child health record (the ‘Red Book’). If your child is not registered with a GP, you can still arrange a vaccination through a GP surgery.
